The main objective of the Education and Outreach programme is to create awareness of the importance of CBWS and an understanding of, and support for, conservation and good stewardship of the natural resources – to ensure that stakeholder communities are aware of the environmental values and services of the Corozal Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and the benefits effective management can bring to our communities.
SACD is targeting key community sectors. It has, as one of its priorities, to increase awareness of the need for good stewardship in the youths from the stakeholder communities of Corozal Bay – the next generation of resource users, and future leaders of our communities.
it could take a generation before we see an attitude and behavioural change towards really making a difference. For this reason much of the efforts are focused on engaging schools and students, to inspire good environmental stewaardship in the key stakeholder communities.
Local fishermen and fishermen wives have been the other two key sectors targeted, in consideration of the importance of community awareness and participation for successful management
As a result of proven Programmes, such as the annual Summer Camp, attitudes and behaviours are changing.
Some annual activities include:
- The Schools Open Day, which integrates creative skits and plays with environmental education. In order to participate, each team of students plan an environmental display and booths that show case the benefits their community have from the resources of Corozal Bay.
- The Sarteneja Community Day brings together over fifteen community groups every year. It is a celebration of local culture and sustainable resource use that includes informative booths, competition, games and many other fun-filled activities.
- The Annual Summer Camp provides primary school students each year an opportunity to participate in educational outdoor activities. The camp focuses on teaching participants to appreciate the resources and take care of it, while integrating learning to swim, developing teamwork skills and learning about their local environment.
